Thang* never imagined he would have to flee Myanmar. But as the political situation deteriorated, he left behind everything he knew and arrived in Malaysia clinging to hope. But it wasn’t long before that hope began to slip away.
Each day he searched for work, only to face rejection after rejection. His small savings dwindled. The loneliness was crushing. Surrounded by unfamiliar voices, unable to fully express himself, Thang felt invisible, forgotten.
Fear and anxiety grew into something heavier: despair. Why am I here? How will I survive?
Looking for relief, he turned to alcohol. At first, it quietened the turmoil inside him. But soon it deepened the darkness. The shame, the confusion, the sense of being trapped - it all became overwhelming.
One evening, scrolling through the radio channels on his phone, Thang came across something unexpected: Hingna Awl, a Christian programme in his own Matu language. Drawn in by the familiarity, he listened.
That day, the message was based on Luke 15:11–32, the Parable of the Lost Son. As Thang listened, his heart stirred. This wasn’t just a story; it was his story.
Broken and desperate, he turned back to God. And in that moment, the despair lifted. Peace - real, deep peace - filled his heart.
He contacted the programme team and shared his story, asking for prayer - that God would help him not fall back into sin.
Thang was home.
The programme that reached Thang is called Hingna Awl, meaning “Living Waters”. It is a lifeline for the Matu people of Myanmar.
Produced by Pastor Win and his team, the programme broadcasts in the Matu language through shortwave radio and digital platforms such as Facebook and Messenger, reaching people wherever they are, even across borders and into isolated communities.
Today, the ministry is expanding beyond radio. Under Pastor Win's guidance, three new ‘Heroes of History’ comics have been produced in Matu, bringing the stories of Job, Noah and Creation to life for readers across Myanmar.
