Back in 2014, Reach Beyond worker Adeline trained a group of Christian community development team in Ghana. Geyma was one of the people who received the training and a year later he helped the community in Lanya to dig a well.
Applying what he learnt at our training, Geyma launched the Water and Sanitation committee (WATSAN) for overseeing all aspects related to water and sanitation in Lanya. During the construction phase, Geyma and WATSAN committee members set up a bank account and hosted classes on hygiene for local families.
Once the well was completed and inaugurated, they asked every family to contribute a small monthly amount for the maintenance of their well.
Geyma recalled an incident when there was a problem with the well in Lanya and the WATSAN committee promptly contacted him, and he connected them with a technician who fixed the issue.
Recently, the WATSAN committee decided to utilise some of the accumulated funds to purchase a grain mill for their community.
The water project has led to many good things happening in Lanya, including opportunities for Geyma and others to share the gospel with local families.
"Often, we perceive the Fulfulde people living in Lanya as cow herders, and troublemakers, but they are people, just like us, and they too need Christ!" – said Geyma.
When Geyma shared this story at a recent training course of local media partners who are seeking to launch water projects in their communities in Ghana, the room was filled with enthusiastic applause!
