Reach for Water: Communities Ready for Change

It doesn’t take many hot days in the UK before we start panicking about potential hosepipe bans! But while we might occasionally have a shortage of water for luxuries like watering our gardens, there are some places in the world where safe, clean water is always out of reach, year in and year out.

Nearly 1 billion people are living without access to clean water, and resulting diseases kill more people each year than all forms of violence; war included.

Every week 30,000 deaths occur worldwide from unsafe water and unhygienic living conditions. 90% of those deaths are in children under five years old. The World Health Organisation has reported 93.5% of water-related deaths worldwide could be prevented by improving water supply, sanitation and hygiene.

The Andean community of Mariana de Jesús in Ecuador were reaching out for clean water for five years. This group of people were identified as the poorest of the poor. They were told that if they bought land they would be given houses and water.

So they saved up hard, bought a small plot of land and asked for houses. “To get houses, you must have water” they were told. So they tried to get water. “To get water, you must have houses…”

Stuck in a vicious circle their situation looked hopeless until they learned about Reach Beyond. With a little support from our engineers, this community were able to build their own water system, experiencing God’s love in action.

“I’m grateful to Reach Beyond because they have understood the reality of our battle” said community treasurer, Lorenzo.

A clean water project can be a catalyst for a whole process of long term development within a community. This is what we call ‘transformational ministry’. But we can’t do it alone.

That is why we have launched

Reach for Water is an ongoing campaign that offers safe drinking water from a reliable source to communities across the globe from Latin America to Africa to Central Asia. Relationships will be formed, the gospel will be shared, and lives will be transformed both physically and spiritually.

You can be part of this process by praying, giving or going.

PRAY – thanking God for the gift of water. Pray for His provision of clean water for the needy. Pray for God’s Holy Spirit to change people’s hearts so that they accept Jesus as the Living Water. Click here for more ideas how to PRAY.

GIVE – even a small amount given regularly can help prevent people getting sick from drinking dirty water. Or maybe you could you run, swim, cycle, crawl or anything else you fancy to raise money for a clean water project! Why not make Reach for Water the focus of your churches’ harvest festival this year? Go to our Just Giving page to make a gift now or to sign up to fundraise for Reach for Water. Click here for more ideas how to GIVE.

GO – Do you, or does someone you know, have technical or engineering skills? We are looking for people to serve for one year or longer. Could your church form a missions team to spend two weeks working on a water project alongside missionaries and local communities? Click here for more ideas how to GO.

You can also find plenty more ideas as to how you can get involved by requesting a free Reach for Water pack.

Will you join us in reaching communities across the globe with water? Will you commit to praying or giving or going to reach the unreached with the transformational message of Jesus the Living Water?

The Lord said, “The poor and needy search for water, but there is none; their tongues are parched with thirst. But I the Lord will answer them; I, the God of Israel, will not forsake them.” (Isaiah 41:17)
